What is Federation?

So, I just came back from ForgeRock Open Identity Summit. Along the way, completed my 2nd half-marathon last Sunday by taking part in The Wipro San Francisco Marathon.

During one of the presentations by Victor Ake, the product manager for OpenAM, I was enlightened by his simple illustration of what Federation is all about.
